 Shades of Envy Excerpts

"As I walked away, my conscience suddenly kicked into high gear. A strong sense of responsibility sliced through me. What if this woman really was in distress? What if she needed my help?

Spooked, I turned back. This time I pushed harder on her arm and said loudly, “Excuse me. Please, get up. You’re scaring me.”

No acknowledgment of my frightened demand.

      Wait a sec!

     Was she okay?

Was she in some kind of medical crisis while I just stood there gazing at her? Daydreaming? Doing nothing?

Heart pounding, I squatted down and carefully watched her breathing. I panicked as I saw that her chest was still. Like, really still. There was no up and down motion.

Why hadn’t I noticed that before?

I guess I’d been too focused on finding Lindsay.

     Oh no!

     Was she in cardiac arrest?

Deciding not to waste any more time, I quickly called 911, and then gently moved her head to the side, preparing to begin first aid measures, if needed.

I jumped back as a pool of blood oozed out.

     I screamed.

Whoever it was, had been shot.

     Right between the eyes.

Shades of Envy  Reviews

In Shades of Envy, Samantha Barclay, Suzanne Hurleys high school counselor heroine, is back, bringing with her familiar characters from previous books who live and work in the charming town of Paxton, West Virginia.  Also on hand is a deeply troubled student, not to mention a corpse, a group of suspects, and a chilling villain whose identity is the books biggest surprise.

Samantha is the kind of counselor every student should have.  She is courageous and compassionate and genuinely cares about young people.  Furthermore, she is willing to help them even after the school day ends, even when this means placing her own life in jeopardy.

When Lindsay, one of Sams students, begins to come late to her first hour class, using visitations to Saint Judes Church as an excuse, Samantha goes in search of her.  Instead of the tardy student she discovers a dead woman lying in a church pew and soon finds herself once again involved in a life-or-death situation, with the emphasis on death.

Ironically the murdered woman is an old girlfriend of Samanthas love, Sheriff Al Michaels, with a deadly grudge against Sam.

How is Lindsay connected to the murdered woman, if indeed there is a connection?  What part do a creepy food disorder clinic and a sinister doctor play in the deadly event?  Searching for answers, Samantha goes undercover as a client of the clinic, claiming that she suffers from bulimia.  Here she finds herself surrounded by suspicious people and, before long, theres another murder.

Woven into the Samanthas first person narrative are short sections in which the unknown killer reveals his twisted thoughts and plans, as well as third person chapters following another characters paralyzing fear of a killer she refers to as the Shadow.

In SHADES OF ENVY Suzanne Hurley demonstrates again that she has a firm handle on the sources of teen aged angst; on anorexia, problems with parents, and the current vampire craze that has lured a frightening number of students into its web.

How Samantha solves the murder mysteries and unmasks the killer make fascinating reading as do the developments in her relationship with Sheriff Al Michaels that culminate in one of the books surprises.

Ms. Hurleys characters are the kind the reader is likely to encounter in every day life.  The suspense is unrelenting, the stakes high, and the plot memorable for its twists and turns.  Best of all, the ending hints at a new stage in Samanthas career and new trouble brewing for a future Samantha book.  SHADES OF ENVY deserves many stars.  Its a fast-paced, enjoyable mystery read.

Quote:

Samantha Barclay, Milton High School counselor in Paxton, West Virginia has a nose for trouble, but the truth be known she doesn't have to look for it, it has a way of stalking her. This multi-faceted plot will lead you to the emotional depths of Munchausen by proxy, clinical avarice, as well as the deep dark secrets of a new vampire cult taking over the schools teenagers.

Counselor Samantha Barclay, and her sweetheart, Sheriff Al Michaels, work separately and together unearthing the clues of just who is murdering off the local eating disorder clinics clients. Unwittingly, Sam discovers she is frequently two steps ahead of the law and her boyfriend in discovering just who did what, to whom and why. This after all is what counselors do.

But suspecting someone of killing off people, and finding solid proof doesn't always come easy. Even when everyone, including her protective father, nag her to let the law handle it, Sam finds her mind wont shut down when she is digging up the truth.

This multi-level suspense is sure to keep you on your toes with its sudden twist of events, and surprising clues. I highly recommend it.

Review #3:

Shades of Envy is the latest edition in the Samantha Barclay Series. Author Suzanne Hurley is right on her game and her story gets you “Right between the eyes.” Right from the green cover to the complicated relationship Samantha has with her handsome boyfriend Sheriff Al Michaels the seeds of envy are planted. Is Al Michaels seeing someone else? Is his new partner Krissy trying to take her boyfriend away? It all starts with a former girlfriend of Al Michaels. She is murdered in a church. Samantha finds the body and begins to follow the clues. One step ahead of the police, Samantha is always trying to put the pieces together. Al refers to her as Freud for her compulsion to analyze every situation looking for motives.  Samantha investigates the eating disorder clinic, Ginas Place. A cast of interesting characters surrounding the clinic provide plenty of mystery. What role does the past play in the present murders? And how does this all fit into the present events?

Author Suzanne Hurley offers a great addition to her Samantha Barclay series. Envy and jealously rear their ugly head. A must read!!!
